VirtualNewsCenter started in 2005 under the name CustomRadioNews. Bootstrapped by entrepreneurs Scott Roberts and Ryan Martin, the company developed out of a recognition that radio stations needed to continue delivering relevant local content in spite of the budgetary pressures present then.
The idea of letting stations outsource their news content was still unheard of by most. There were a few people who were offering local news coverage remotely, mostly people who were doing it as a sideline to a voiceover business or people who had moved on from small to large market and were doing news for their original market as a courtesy. Roberts and Martin built the infrastructure needed to do remote news service on a much larger scale.
In spite of a number of other providers having come into the field since the company started, none of the others have grown larger than a few stations . . . many because news is still a sideline to a voiceover business or something they do for extra folding money alongside a full-time job. Most of the others have either worked for us briefly or were not brought aboard, for one reason or another.
VirtualNewsCenter is the only remote news producer that uses its own custom-written software to collect, write and deliver the news for your local market. At all levels of the process, unique tools and methods are used by some of the best anchors and reporters in the business to make your local news sound great and serve your community effectively.
In July, 2010, VirtualNewsCenter signed a representation agreement with Envision Radio to be the first outsourced radio news provider to offer its service on a barter basis to stations in Arbitron-rated markets. The company continues to offer its remote news service in smaller markets as well, saving stations thousands of dollars each year.
